I was all set to work on blogging an engagement session this afternoon, until someone pointed out it was Travel Tuesday and asked if I was posting my vacation pictures! So, quick change in plans and in keeping with the Travel Tuesday tradition let’s take a trip to St. John, USVI & Jost Van Dyke, BVI.
Our trip started bright and early on Sunday morning! It was a solid 12 hours of traveling but when we finally saw the water and the town of Cruz Bay it was SO worth it! These views made 12 hours seem like 12 minutes!
That night we got settled in to our hotel and explored the town a little bit. We also ate dinner at Woody’s – a local seafood joint that kind of became “our place” for the week. With $1 drinks from 3-6pm, how could you not love it?
Most of St. John is a U.S. National Park. You have to drive and/or walk to the beaches. However, it’s amazing because there is no commercial development near the beaches, which makes it feel almost like a deserted island! On Monday morning we walked to Honeymoon Bay to go to the beach! It was over a mile from our hotel – not such a bad hike considering the destination. . . when we stepped out of the woods and onto the beach I was overwhelmed!
There is a herd of wild donkeys that live in the national park! They’re definitely used to people and we were so excited when we heard them come up behind us! They were hilarious and we had a lot of fun with them!
On the way back we hiked to an overlook to capture the view of Cruz Bay!
On Tuesday we took a day trip to Jost Van Dyke, BVI. We made it to the morning ferry and it was a gorgeous ride over! Once we arrived we decided to walk to the other side of the island where the main bars were – why take a cab when you have two legs, right?! Well, of course it was all HILL. I was a tad hot and somewhat regretful until our “walk/hike” afforded us this view of White Bay! I mean Oh.My.Goodness! Whew! It was like straight out of a movie or some kind of fantasy land. . .
Once we made it down the hill, albeit very carefully, we arrived at Ivan’s Stressfree Beach Bar! The bar itself wasn’t open yet but we were able to explore inside and take a few photos. SIDE NOTE: for those of you who may be Kenny Chesney fans, when he sings “Kickin’ back with Ivan, and all my friends down in the Islands,” he is referring to Ivan who owns this bar! He also filmed the video for “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems” here!
Next we ventured over to the Soggy Dollar Bar! It was amazing! We spent most of the day here relaxing on the beach and drinking “Painkillers” – a local rum drink that is my new favorite thing ever!
Our last stop of the day was at Foxy’s to taste his world famous “Firewater Rum”!! It was delicious! We were having a blast and Josh even scored an empty bottle from the bartender!
I wandered off to take some photos (naturally) and was down by the water when a local at the bar ushered me over — he said he wanted to take me and my friend to meet Foxy! I was of course skeptical because really what were the odds that 1) Foxy was even there and 2) that he would actually take us… Well, Josh gave the go-ahead and we walked with the guy behind the bar to an out building – almost like a tree house of sorts! Sure enough, there was Foxy, guitar and all! We told him we were from Virginia and he played us a song all about our state! It was hilarious. He was hilarious! He talked about meeting and receiving an honor for the Queen of England, spending the day with Kenny Chesney and various Governors from the U.S. Meeting him was definitely a highlight of the trip!
OK this post is getting far too long! I think I will leave Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for PART 2! Perhaps I will post that next Tuesday! Until then, here is a preview of the beautiful beaches to come!
