I hope all of you had a fantastic weekend! Mine was complete with a wonderful wedding that I can’t wait to share! (More from that on Wednesday!) I am currently in the middle of a stretch of 4 weddings in 4 weeks – it is amazing!! Before kicking off this crazy month of July, I made it a point to visit with a few of my industry friends. One of those visits was to Buttercups Floral’s Cut Flower Garden.

Laura has started a beautiful flower garden on her property. It’s full of fresh flowers of all kinds, succulents, and also BEES! I was very curious about the bees because I knew so little about what went in to raising them. It’s a lot of work but Laura is a total pro! She has four hives and they’re all doing great!

I really enjoyed spending time with her and also hearing about her big plans for the garden. She is currently using some of the flowers for her gorgeous arrangements, but hopes to eventually get almost all of her flowers from the garden itself! This means a big expansion that will happen over the next few years. She also hopes to have honey from the bees to use for favors – it’s an amazing idea!

I am so inspired by all Laura has going on in her business. She is truly passionate about her craft and someone who makes things happen! We have our first wedding of the year together this weekend and I cannot wait to photograph her work! I know it’s going to be beautiful!

Here are a few images from our time together:

Roughly once a month, I introduce one of my favorite vendors in the industry– completely unpaid, just out of sheer love of working with them.

In this month’s installment, I am proud to feature floral artist Laura Walker of Buttercups Floral Design. Laura is incredibly gifted at what she does. She is a true artist and her medium is flowers – or doors, or birdcages, or glass vases. . . What blows me away about Laura is her creativity. She can take a bride’s vision and bring it to life no matter what it is! As a result, her work spans all styles. She can accommodate anyone’s taste in a way that’s true to herself, which is really difficult to do! Without further ado, meet Laura!

How did you get started?
My two passions have always been plants and the arts. We always had a flower /veggie garden growing up, which was so fun. I also indulged in pottery, drawing, photography and sculpture. This directly impacted my path after high school.
In college I worked to get a Visual Communications Degree from Shepherd Univerisity and a Horticulture Degree from Penn State.  Upon graduation I was hired as a vineyard manager for a few vineyards in Loudoun County, VA.
Today, Buttercups Floral has a cut flower garden to provide local flowers to clients, many decor items to make any event splendid, and a experienced joyful crew.

What inspires your work?
The international grocery store is a great place for inspiration. There are so many exotic fruits that are perfect for centerpieces. Sometimes the fashion industry also provides ideas! We have made purses, jewelry, and hairpieces all out of florals for clients.  We always try to stay trendy and fresh! I find that inspiration comes from everywhere.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to go on walks with my Husband and our 2 dogs. I also enjoy kayaking on the Shenandoah River near our home, and of course working in my cut flower garden.

What’s a fun fact about you that your clients may not know?
Buttercups Floral also provides Candy Buffets and draping for events!

Do you have any insider tips on makeup or for brides on how to choose their wedding day florals/decor?
Bring photos of  stylish items included in your wedding to the consultation. These items can be Save the Dates, invites, Swatches, Dress pictures, Venue Photos, etc. This will help us to determine which flowers would work best with the rest of the event.

How much time should a bride plan for floral set up?
We always like install designs as early as possible, so guests can marvel at the finished product, instead of seeing the set up. The Venue normally determines when we arrive. Check with your venue to see when vendors can start arriving.
What’s trending in the floral industry for Weddings/Events now?
Vintage Weddings are very popular right now. We have many Vintage and Modern rentals to assist with centerpiece options.

What trend are you tired of seeing?
Mason Jars. . . Not that they aren’t great, but they have been done over and over. If you want to use them add a spin – like colored mason jars.
What’s your favorite moment during the wedding day?
My favorite part is always when the bride sees her bouquet for the 1st time. I love to see the 1st reactions!

These three words are my approach to photography. I strive for my work to possess all three qualities.

Timeless – Your collection should stand the test of time. I want you to look back at your images five, ten, twenty years from now and still love them as much as you did the first time you saw them.

Touching – Your images should evoke emotion and take you back to the moment they were captured.

True – Your images should represent YOU! They should be true to who you were at the time they were taken.

I hold myself accountable to these three standards and always shoot with them in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you typically shoot?
I like working with my clients to come up with the perfect location. The ultimate decision is made by the client – I merely serve as a reference!

When do you typically shoot?
As I prefer shooting outdoors in natural light, sessions are held either in the morning or evening. Typically 2 hours after sunrise or 2 hours before sunset.

What should I wear?
In my experience, there is not a particular color or pattern that photographs better/worse than another. So, I always tell clients to wear something that is true to who they are. If you wear sneakers more than heels, take that into consideration. You want your photos to be true to you – and outfit choice plays a critical role.

How long before I get to see my photos?
I will post a blog sneak peek within a few days of your shoot or event.

For Weddings, you can expect your gallery of images 4 weeks from your wedding date – the perfect one month anniversary present!
For Senior & Portrait sessions, you can expect your gallery of images within 2 weeks time.

What products do you offer?
I offer a variety of products for you to choose from including: Leather Flush-mount Albums, Guest Books, Canvas Wall Art, custom designed Thank You cards, Save-the-Dates, Graduation Announcements, and much more.

A few weeks ago, I was honored to have worked with a team of fabulous wedding professionals (credits below) in creating a “Modern Musician” inspired wedding shoot! With contemporary components like orchids, terrariums and dark purple accents, this shoot satisfies every modern bride’s desire for a sleek, streamlined look.  The Bright Box Theater in downtown Winchester provided the perfect backdrop. It’s unique combination of historic and ultramodern elements highlighted the essence of this shoot.

Last week I had the opportunity to photograph one of my first styled shoots! I was honored to have worked with a team of fabulous wedding professionals (credits below) in creating a “Shenandoah” inspired wedding shoot! With rustic elements like burlap, bird cages and a naked cake, this shoot borrowed from the natural elements found in the Shenandoah region.  Furthermore, the view at Blue Mountain Lodge epitomizes Shenandoah.  To highlight the view from the mountaintop, we created a ceremony backdrop made of old doors! It framed the view perfectly while continuing that rustic feel. Any bride can draw inspiration from this shoot if you’re planning a laid-back, country-style wedding! I personally loved the s’more bar – such a fun way to continue the party!
